Frequently Asked Paternity QUESTIONS
What is paternity testing?
Paternity testing is an analysis of the DNA to determine if a man is the biological father of a given child.
How is the DNA sample collected? Will it be painful to my child?
It is a simple process of swabbing the inside of the cheek with a buccal swab. DNA cells are found throughout the body—we gently rub the swab across the inside of the cheek and then seal it up for processing and testing. The swab resembles a large cotton swab.
What is the difference between a legal DNA test and a private DNA test?
We utilize a fully accredited lab with years of experience. Our results are 100% admissible in a court of law . A private DNA test or a DNA test that does not provide the required accuracy level is not usually admissible in court. You may choose to have a test done with a lower accuracy level, no guarantee and a cheaper, less experienced lab for personal reasons but these types of tests do not properly document the chain of custody or meet other legal requirements—and often do not provide a level of accuracy to determine the biological father.
Why is it important to establish legal paternity?
There are several reasons to request a legal test—the child may be entitled to legal benefits, social security benefits, veteran’s benefits and even child support. Further, the father’s medical history may be important at some point for the child’s medical care.
How much does a paternity test cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of test and number of individuals tested.
A test done to establish legal paternity with an accuracy level of greater than 99.99% costs about $450
A non-legal test costs about $380 . Please refer to ???? put the tab in here.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Mastercard or Visa, certified bank checks, cash or personal checks. We allow you to make payments. Results will not be released until the balance is paid in full. You must pay a deposit of $225 at the time we collect the DNA specimens and before we submit the specimen to the lab. Personal checks must clear our depository account before results are released. In order to get your results quickly – consider paying by credit card or by a certified bank check.
Why is accreditation important?
It is vital to receive the best, most accurate results available. We use a respected, fully accredited lab with years of experience to provide you with guaranteed results fully admissible in court. The accreditation level and quality control standards of the lab you select should be the highest level available--- you get what you pay for—so get the very best. For more information see our section on “Accreditation”.
Can a paternity test be performed without the mother?
Yes. If the mother is available and willing it is helpful but not required for the test. A child receives one half of their DNA from their mother and one half from their father. Both sets of DNA present a clear picture for the lab and allow the lab to isolate the mother’s DNA. If the mother is not available or willing the test can still be performed and an accurate result provided. The lab may test more DNA markers in order to provide an accurate result.
What documentation do I need in order to get a legal paternity test?
We need a current federal or state issued Identification such as a drivers license. The child’s Birth Certificate if available. If the birth certificate is not available --you will be asked to complete a form requesting the child’s birth date, full name and your relationship.
Why do you take a picture of the person being tested?
The photo documents whose DNA is being analyzed and we can easily document, if necessary, in a legal proceeding who was swabbed . This is especially helpful when the parties live in different communities.
How do I receive my results?
You provide instructions on how you wish to receive your results on the chain of custody form. We can call you, fax you or email results. The original notarized report can also be mailed to you. We will also mail your results to your attorney or representative. Again, you simply designate on the chain of custody form your instructions.
What if I want more than one child or more than one alleged father tested?
Additional children or additional alleged fathers can be tested. Ask about the additional costs at the time you schedule your test or go to our pricing section.
Can you test newborn babies?
Yes. A newborn infant can be tested. Just call us and ask us to come to the hospital. The mother will want the child in her room to observe the process and sign the required forms. The DNA is collected by a buccal swab (a large cotton swab) so it does not cause any pain to the newborn infant.
How long does it take to get results?
In most cases 3 business days. You may also receive results the next business day. The 24 hour test costs about $100 more than the 3 day test.
Do I need a doctor’s permission, a court order or attorney to get a paternity test?
Not usually. Most paternity tests are performed at the request of either the mother or the alleged father for the purpose of establishing legal paternity. Some states have certain requirements – just email us and we can provide additional information. We do not provide legal or medical advice.
